An ecosystem has producers, consumers and decomposers. Energy enters as sunlight, and green plants convert only a small fraction of what falls on them into food energy. Thereafter only about ten per cent passes from one trophic level to the next, the rest lost as heat and in life processes — that ten per cent law explains why food chains rarely exceed four or five levels and why biomass falls as you go up. Energy flows one way and never returns, while matter is cycled repeatedly.

Decomposers act at every level, which is why they are not placed at a single step of a chain. Ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs ultraviolet radiation, so depletion raises the risk of skin cancer.
