Metals and Non-metals — chapter notes
Start with properties: metals are lustrous, malleable, ductile and conduct heat and electricity, while non-metals generally do not, with the usual exceptions worth remembering. The reactivity series ranks metals by how readily they lose electrons, and it decides everything downstream — which metal displaces which from a solution, which can be extracted by which method, and which resists corrosion. Reading displacement reactions backwards to deduce the order is a favourite question type.
Ionic compounds form when a metal transfers electrons to a non-metal, giving high melting points, solubility in water, and conduction when molten or dissolved but not as a solid. Metallurgy follows the series too: highly reactive metals are obtained by electrolysis, moderately reactive ones by roasting or calcination then reduction. Finish with corrosion and its prevention — painting, oiling, galvanising and alloying.
