Chemical Reactions and Equations — chapter notes
A chemical equation is only useful once it is balanced, because atoms are neither created nor destroyed. Balance by counting each element on both sides and adjusting coefficients, never subscripts — changing a subscript changes the substance itself. Then learn to name the reaction type. Combination joins two or more reactants into one product; decomposition splits one into several, usually needing heat, light or electricity; displacement has a more reactive element pushing out a less reactive one; double displacement swaps partners between two compounds, and when one product is insoluble it settles out as a precipitate.
Reactions that release heat are exothermic, those that absorb it are endothermic. Oxidation and reduction always happen together — one substance gains oxygen or loses hydrogen while another does the reverse. Identifying which substance is oxidised and which is reduced is a common two-mark question, so state both.
