Life Processes — chapter notes

The chapter covers the four processes that keep an organism alive, in both plants and animals. Nutrition: photosynthesis in plants, and the path of food through the human alimentary canal with the enzyme acting at each stage — knowing which enzyme digests which nutrient answers a lot of questions. Respiration: aerobic gives much more energy than anaerobic, and the products differ, so learn both equations.

Transport: in humans the double circulation through a four-chambered heart, with arteries carrying blood away and veins returning it; in plants, xylem moving water upwards and phloem carrying food both ways. Excretion: the nephron filters blood, and urine passes collecting duct, ureter, bladder, urethra in that order. Diagrams are examined directly, so practise drawing and labelling the heart, the nephron and the digestive system rather than only reading them.
