Every CBSE Class 12 student needs to know the minimum marks required to pass — not just in total, but in each subject separately. The rule is simple but often misunderstood: you must pass theory and practical independently.

📌 The Golden Rule: Score at least 33% in every subject — separately in theory AND in practical/internal assessment. There is no minimum aggregate percentage to pass CBSE Class 12.

CBSE Class 12 Minimum Passing Marks — Core Rule

ComponentTotal MarksMinimum to PassWhat It Means
Theory Exam8026 marks33% of 80 = 26.4 → rounded to 26
Practical / Internal Assessment207 marks33% of 20 = 6.6 → rounded to 7
Total (per subject)10033 marksBoth above conditions must be met separately

⚠️ Critical: You cannot use high practical marks to compensate for low theory marks. Both must be cleared independently. Scoring 40 in practical and 20 in theory means you fail that subject — even though the total is 60.

Subjects with Different Theory/Practical Split

Not all CBSE Class 12 subjects follow the 80+20 split. Some subjects have different weightings:

Subject TypeTheoryPractical/InternalMin. TheoryMin. Practical
Most main subjects (Maths, Physics, Chemistry etc.)70302310
English, Hindi, other languages8020267
Some subjects (Biology, Accounts etc.)70302310
Physical Education70302310

📌 The exact theory/practical split varies by subject. Always check your specific subject's marking scheme from cbse.gov.in to confirm the exact minimum marks for your subjects.

What Happens If You Fail a Subject?

If you score below the minimum in any subject, CBSE places you in the Compartment category. This is NOT a repeat of the year — here is what happens:

  • You get one more chance to appear in the failed subject(s) in the Compartment exam
  • For the 2025-26 batch, CBSE's new second board exam system also provides an additional opportunity
  • If you clear the Compartment, your pass certificate is issued
  • You can apply for provisional Class 12 admission to colleges while waiting for the Compartment result

Is There a Minimum Aggregate Percentage to Pass?

No. CBSE Class 12 has no minimum aggregate percentage requirement. You only need to clear each subject individually with 33% in theory and 33% in practical. A student who scores 33 in every subject passes Class 12 — even if the aggregate is only 33%. The aggregate percentage matters for college admissions, not for passing the board exam itself.
